Prime Minister Karki Honors National Luminary Shankhadhar Sakhwa on Nepal Sambat 1146 New Year

Kathmandu – Prime Minister Sushila Karki led a program to celebrate the beginning of Nepal Sambat 1146, the indigenous Newar New Year, by paying tribute to its founder, National Luminary Shankhadhar Sakhwa.

On the occasion of Nhu Daun (New Year), Prime Minister Karki offered a wreath at the statue of Shankhadhar Sakhwa, who is revered for establishing the calendar by historically relieving the poor people of Nepal from their debts in 880 AD.

The wreath-laying ceremony, which marks the commencement of the new era, signifies the government's recognition of Sakhwa's immense contribution to society and the nation's rich cultural heritage. The Nepal Sambat is observed with festive zeal, cultural rallies, and Mha Puja (self-worship) across the country, especially within the Newar community.
