US Ambassador Officially Inaugurates AWON Bazar 2025

Kathmandu, Nov 16, 2025
— The special AWON Bazaar, one of Kathmandu’s longest-running charity events, was successfully held yesterday at Soaltee Kathmandu, Autograph Collection. Organized by Active Women of Nepal (AWON), the annual event continued its legacy of more than four decades and drew a large turnout of visitors, exhibitors, and supporters from Expats and Nepali community.

The Bazaar was formally inaugurated at 10:30 AM by His Excellency Dean R. Thompson, US Ambassador to Nepal, along with his spouse Mrs. Jane Krill Thompson, Honorary President of AWON. Sharing her experience, Mrs. Thompson said, “AWON is always memorable for us. We come here every year to buy Christmas essentials. This year’s event was wonderful. We did a lot of shopping, and the quality of goods here is truly the cherry on top. The variety is huge, and everything is available in one place at affordable prices.”

This year’s event was supported by Yatra Magazine, Nepal Airlines, Buddha Air, AIWIBI Australia, Century Spices and Snacks, Rupy's International School, and Dabur Nepal. More than 100 stalls showcased a diverse range of products, including local startups, organic items, handicrafts, fashion wear, festive décor, and handmade gifts. Families and children enjoyed food stalls, kids’ activities, and entertainment programs throughout the day.

Proceeds collected from the bazaar will support AWON’s long-running charitable work, which includes women’s welfare, community outreach, and assistance to marginalized groups.

Established 77 years ago, AWON started as a small network of women associated with the American Embassy but has since grown into an inclusive platform for expatriate and Nepali women. The organization continues to promote charity, cultural exchange, and community development.

The main motto of the AWON Bazaar is to create a platform for local Nepali products and support women entrepreneurs," stated AWON President Baba Sarkar Shrestha. "Our guests include both expatriates and Nepalis who come for their holiday and wedding shopping.” With enthusiastic participation and lively festive spirit, the AWON Bazaar once again proved to be one of Kathmandu’s most vibrant and impactful charity events of the year.
